Former Egyptian international hockey player and coach Mohamed Samak, a 42-year-old resident of Chestnut Spinney in Droitwich Spa, has been charged with the murder of his wife, Joanne Samak, following an incident at their home on July 1. Joanne, a senior stylist with an interior design firm, was found critically injured when police responded to a call at approximately 4.10am. Despite the efforts of ambulance staff, who administered advanced life support, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Samak, currently held at HMP Hewell, did not attend a recent hearing at Birmingham Crown Court but is scheduled for a plea hearing at Worcester Crown Court on August 2. His trial is set to begin on November 4.
In a statement, Joanne’s family described her as a loving and generous person, deeply mourned by those who knew her. They expressed their profound grief over her sudden death and have been moved by the support and tributes from the community.
Samak’s coaching career includes roles with the Welsh under 18s boys and girls hockey teams, and previous positions at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School and Malvern College. The community remains in shock as the legal process unfolds, seeking answers to this tragic event.
