Pensioner, 87, dies after brutal daylight robbery in Manor House—suspect charged with murder as detectives launch Operation Cedarbirch manhunt for answers.
An investigation into the death of an elderly man in Manor House, north London, has resulted in charges of murder and robbery against a 58-year-old suspect. The victim, identified in open court as John Mackey, was 87 years old and a resident of the Goodchild Road area of Manor House.
At approximately 17:53 BST on Tuesday 6 May, officers from the Metropolitan Police were dispatched to Goodchild Road, N4, following reports of a robbery. They were accompanied by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service. On arrival, they found Mr Mackey with injuries described as serious. He was transported to hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries two days later, dying on Thursday 8 May.
The Met’s Specialist Crime Command launched an immediate inquiry under the codename Operation Cedarbirch. Investigating officers arrested Peter Augustine, 58, at an address in Green Lanes, Hornsey, on Thursday 8 May. Augustine, whose full date of birth is listed as 25 October 1966 (23.10.1966), was taken into custody and subsequently charged on Friday 9 May with murder and robbery in connection with Mr Mackey’s death.
He appeared before Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 10 May, where he was formally remanded in custody. The case has now been sent to the Central Criminal Court—commonly known as the Old Bailey—where Augustine is scheduled to appear on Monday 13 May for a preliminary hearing.
In court proceedings to date, the victim has been referred to as John Mackey, though the Metropolitan Police have confirmed that formal identification procedures are still ongoing. Officers continue to support Mr Mackey’s next of kin, who have been informed.
