Verdicts returned in Manchester Airport police assault trial – jury unable to reach verdicts on one charge
A jury has found one of two brothers guilty of three assaults, including attacks on two women police officers, following a violent confrontation at Manchester Airport — but failed to reach a verdict on the a charge involving a male PC.
Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, was found guilty of assaulting a man inside Terminal 2 and of assaulting two female police officers during a struggle near the airport pay station. His brother Muhammad Amaad, 25, was not convicted of any offence, with no verdict reached on the single charge he faced.
The jury of eleven, who began deliberating on Monday at Liverpool Crown Court, returned majority verdicts this afternoon (Tuesday). They were earlier told by Judge Neil Flewitt KC that he would now accept verdicts of 10 to 1.
VERDICTS IN FULL
Count 1:
Mohammed Fahir Amaaz was found guilty of assault by beating Abdulkareem Hamzah Abbas Ismaeil, the man allegedly headbutted inside a Starbucks shortly after disembarkation.
Count 2:
No verdict was reached on the joint charge against Amaaz and Amaad of assaulting PC Zachary Marsden, causing actual bodily harm.
Count 3:
Amaaz was found guilty of assaulting PC Lydia Ward, causing her actual bodily harm. The officer suffered a broken nose during the struggle.
Count 4:
Amaaz was also found guilty of assaulting an emergency worker, PC Ellie Cook, by beating.
POSSIBLE RETRIAL FOR UNDECIDED CHARGE
Prosecutor Nicholas Greaney KC told the court the Crown Prosecution Service would require time to decide whether to seek a retrial on the unresolved charge involving PC Marsden. A decision is expected in due course.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Mohammed Fahir Amaaz was remanded into custody ahead of sentencing for three offences, including the assault on a male passenger and two female officers.
His co-defendant, Muhammad Amaad, was released on bail, pending further proceedings.
Crown Confirms Retrial on PC Marsden Assault Charge
Shortly after the verdicts were delivered, the case was recalled to court. Prosecutor Nicholas Greaney KC confirmed that the Crown Prosecution Service will seek a retrial on Count 2, which alleges that both defendants assaulted PC Zachary Marsden, causing actual bodily harm.
Mr Greaney told the court:
“It’s the intention of the Crown to seek a retrial for both defendants on count two.”
