Chris Brown Remanded Over Bottle Attack Allegation at Mayfair Club
R&B singer Chris Brown has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with grievous bodily harm over an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub.
The 36-year-old American was arrested on Thursday at The Lowry Hotel in Salford, where he was staying ahead of his upcoming UK tour. He was later charged in connection with an incident said to have taken place at Tape nightclub in Mayfair in 2023.
Brown is accused of using a bottle to inflict serious injuries on music producer Abe Diaw.
The singer appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Friday wearing black tracksuit bottoms and a plain t-shirt. He confirmed his full name as Christopher Maurice Brown and gave The Lowry Hotel as his address.
District Judge Joanne Hirst told the court the charge was too serious to be dealt with at the magistrates’ level and transferred the case to Southwark Crown Court, where Brown is due to appear on 13 June.
Brown had been scheduled to perform in Amsterdam on 8 June, followed by dates in Germany before his UK tour was set to begin in Manchester and Cardiff.
ACCESS TO THE LAW: Grievous Bodily Harm and UK Sentencing Powers
This case highlights the seriousness with which UK law treats allegations of grievous bodily harm (GBH). Under Section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, GBH involves unlawfully wounding or causing serious injury with intent, and it is among the most serious non-fatal offences.
Section 18 GBH is an indictable-only offence, meaning it must be heard in a Crown Court. It carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Sentencing ranges from 3 to 16 years’ custody, depending on the level of harm caused and the offender’s culpability. The use of a weapon—such as a bottle—can be treated as an aggravating factor, often resulting in a higher sentence.
It is important to note that being charged with GBH does not imply guilt. The accused remains presumed innocent until proven guilty and has the right to a fair trial and legal representation.
