West Midlands Police are hailing the actions of a member of the public who provided crucial assistance chasing a fleeing machete-carrying man.
The incident took place in Birmingham city centre on 3 June, where at around 5.15pm, police received a report of a man walking along Broad Street armed with a machete.
As officers rushed to the scene, the suspect attempted to flee, but a courageous member of the public pursued and detained him.
Officers arrived and recovered two knives. The 19-year-old was arrested and later charged with possession of a bladed article.
However, in an unexpected twist, the heroic citizen left before they could be thanked. This has left West Midlands Police keen to identify and formally thank this individual for their actions.
Inspector Roy Teague from the Operations Unit stated, “This person put the safety of the public before their own. That is a remarkable act of bravery, and we want to formally recognise this person for their actions.
“Thanks to this individual, two knives have been removed from the streets of Birmingham, potentially saving lives.”
Appealing to readers, Inspector Teague continued: “If this was you, please get in touch. Or if you know who this person was, please ask them to contact us. It’s important that they are recognised for their brave actions.”
Emphasising that the police do not wish for members of the public to put themselves in danger, he added:
“While we are very thankful to this person, we’d always encourage members of the public to prioritise their own safety and call 999 in such circumstances.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands Police on Live Chat, quoting log 3918 of 3 June.
Well, that’s all for now. But until our next article, please stay tuned, stay informed, but most of all stay safe, and I’ll see you then.
